So I recently returned from the flamer-fest... errr... I mean... furry-fest that was AnthroCon Twenty-oh-nine. Got to meet a lot of fellow furries. Some new faces, some people I already knew. I attended a lot of events, from a game tournament (Which I lost pathetically at...) to attending a couple of comedy shows, it was loads of fun. My only complaint is that I wish it could have been longer, but that time has come and gone and now we must move on. But furries... I love being surrounded by the weird aura that emanates from within the core of The Fandom. I mean, sure, I get a little irked by some if not most of those in The Fandom, but really, it's the overall weirdness (and an odd attraction to people in animal costumes) that draws me to it. Of course, within The Fandom there is a large number of artists, and out of feelings of envy and jealousy that I wanted to get my name on that list. However, I lacked any form of motivation for doing anything productive. I was always looking for distractions, I was always running into the "I Can't Do It" Brick Wall of Defeat, never wanted to practice, yet the ideas piled up in my head. The creativity was "up here" *points to his head* and not in here *holds his hands out*. And yet, it was one drawing class at AnthroCon that felt like it changed that. We were shown a variety of techniques, ways to practice, ways to make ourselves better. It felt like the thing that was missing from the Drawing classes I took at the Institute: a technique. Or maybe that we were always drawing a subject in Drawing class rather than what was from the mind, the true core of artistic development. Or the fact that the guy in the AC Drawing session actually told us how we could practice, how we could make ourselves better, rather than just having some cock-of-douche say "just practice" without giving us a solid explanation as to "how to". Or whatever.
But after that session, I had the sudden urge to draw... well, whatever came to mind, only this time I knew what I was doing. I had the idea, I had the drive this time, I grabbed my pencil, flipped open my sketchbook, and began down that once long-forgotten path that I once traveled as a child. Starting with some cartoons, like the way I used to. Hell, they might be even better. I dunno. But I feel pretty damn good about getting back into it. Hopefully this time I'll stick to it.
"But you've taken classes, you've had a book given to you, you've had people tell you what to do, why now? Why all of a sudden did you suddenly decide 'hey, I think I want to draw now'?" I dunno, I think it was all about being surrounded by the art and the artists and all the different art forms, it was the whole feeling of envy that kicked in every time I visited the art gallery. Then someone telling me how I might be able to start getting better. I think that might have been the push I needed so desperately. I don't know how long I'll last in this phase, if it is even a phase, but I hope to actually better myself in this talent, so that maybe, just maybe, I can actually feel honestly and truly awesome. Or be famous. Or actually have an applicable skill. Or actually drawing hot, smexy furry pr0n. Something along those lines.
Oh... by the way... there is actually another complaint that I have about AnthroCon this year...
